Green thumbs and hands

I've learned that starting a garden is like painting a room: 80% of the process is preparation, 10% is actually planting/painting, and 10% is waiting for it to grow/dry.

My dad did come over yesterday and till up a plot of land for my garden. He started me on preparing it too. Since we had to break up the sod, it was necessary to pull all the grass clods up and throw them out,. Otherwise I would have a grass garden....... which I already have plenty of.  So yesterday and part of today was spent doing that.

Then I set up stakes (bamboo skewers) with twine to make sure my rows were straight (thanks for the tip Dad).

The next step was organizing everything I wanted to plant. I decided to grow:
Mint, chives, basil, salad mix, carrots, hot peppers, pumpkins
(for truly homemade pumpkin pie in the fall), cucumbers (for pickling), green beans,
tomatoes (from plants that were already started), and sweet corn.
I may have been a little ambitious for my first season but I'm confident.

Red cherry and beefsteak toms

All planted and ready for some gorgeous weather :)

I left some empty space to anything we might want to add. We have an (a?) herb fair coming up in a few weeks and I plan on hitting that up for some baby herb plants..... I also might put in some flowers for cutting.

We shall see.
